Good Domain Names – 9 Tips for Choosing a Domain Name

Good domain names can be difficult to find if you do not have the right information. Just by doing a simple search online, you can see many websites that did not have the correct information when choosing a domain name. However, there are many more websites that you will never see in search results because of the domain name that was picked by the websites owner.

Choosing the right domain names can make things much easier in the long run for your websites when trying to rank in the search engines and get free traffic from searches. Below I will give you the 9 tips for choosing a domain name that will help ensure you have a highly visible website, for years to come.

# 1.  Try to avoid crazy or ridiculous names, miss-spelled words, and offensive phrases. Aim to choose a domain name that is simple and easy for your customers to remember for return visits. Clever names can be a great idea from your perspective however, always think of the visitors’ point of view.

#2.  Good domain names are ones that are exact match phrases of the keywords you are trying target in your website. The first thing you should do is a keyword search to find the exact phrases your potential customers are typing into the search engines. A keyword rich domain can be very profitable if you decide to sell it in the future.

#3.  Domain keyword order is important. Words that are more important should go before those less important. For example, if your target keyword is “paychecks”, then “paychecksonline.com” would be more effective than “onlinepaychecks.com”.

#4.  Use correct English and the phrase should make sense. The domain name you choose should be grammatically correct. When your domain is reviewed by a human editor, “getpaychecksonline.com” sounds better and more credible than “paychecksgetonline.com”.

#5.  Limit the length of the URL. A domain name can be up to sixty-three characters, comprising of letters, numbers, and/or the dash symbol. Research has proven that the average person uses 2 or more words when conducting a search. This is why keyword phrases are great but very long or complicated URL’s are more likely to rejected by other websites you would like to receive backlinks from. Do not use all sixty-three characters.

#6.  Try your best to get the keyword rich domain name without hyphens. As a general rule, non-hyphenated domains make for better domain names. However, do not dwell on this rule. Content and backlinks will still be the main determining factor in ranking at the end of the day.

#7.  Add on power words when the keyword phrase domain has already been taken. By adding words like, now, shop, buy, pro, guide, online and find, you can still create a very strong domain name. Most registrars give a list of suggestions when the keyword phrase has been taken.

#8.  Registering a “.com” name is considered the best there is under “.gov” and “.edu”. The next on the list is “.net”, and they are becoming more popular as more and more websites are created daily. Other website extensions are often looked upon as spam, so try to avoid them when possible.

#9.  Shoot for keyword phrases that have 1000 or more searchers per month and less than 30,000 competing sites in Google. Some people have different rules, but these are the numbers I find best to work with. Remember when doing your searches to use exact match instead of broad match. This can affect your research greatly and I learned this lesson the hard way.

Purchasing good domain names is just one thing you can do to ensure the success of your websites. This step is the second step in search engine optimization.
